Political discussion (thanks to Beth for this one...)
Dan Rather of CBS news was seated next to little Tommy on the plane when Rather turned to the boy and said, "Let's talk, I've heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passengers."
Little Tommy, who had just opened his book, closed it slowly, and said to Rather, "What would you like to discuss?"
"Oh, I don't know" said Rather, "How about politics? Should we keep Bush as president or elect Kerry?
"OK" said Little Tommy, "That could be an interesting topic but let me ask you a question first.
A horse, a cow and a deer all eat grass. The same stuff. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out flat patties, and a horse excretes clumps of dried grass. Why do you think that is?"
"Jeez" said Rather, "I have no idea."
"Well then" said Little Tommy, "how is it you feel qualified to discuss who should run this country when you don't know shit?"

Men's Life
It appears that "Men's Life" ministry, headed up by Rick Riley, based around the CFC body is not to be. Rick received very little positive response regarding financial support from the body he was trying to serve full-time, but the man needs to pay his bills while doing what he's called to do/feels passionate about. So, he interviewed for a full-time position at First Christian Church in Newburgh. Regarding the interview Rick asked us, "Have you ever studied for a test and after taking it come away saying, 'Man, that was a slam dunk.'?" He subsequently offered this job and it seems to be exactly where Rick should be. The church is very focused on "men's ministry" and getting the men involved and passionate about relationships with other believers and strengthening their relationship with the Lord. Bottom line: good for Rick and First Christian Church, bummer for "Men's Life"/Band of Brothers/men's ministry at CFC. Of course, God is in control and He'll work it all out - who knows what/who He plans on doing/using at CFC.

Regarding the anti-Bush "Vote for Change" tour...
And at least one rocker - Alice Cooper - thinks people who listen to musicians' political opinions should re-think their approach to politics.
"If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are," Cooper, a Bush supporter, told WorldNetDaily. "Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."

Challenge
I challenge everyone to attempt to educate anyone you know who plans on voting for John Kerry about his position on abortion and homosexual marriage.
Please think for a moment that this guy is the absolute most liberal member of the U.S. Senate.
Imagine the Supreme Court nominee that Kerry would put forward in the event one of the current LIFETIME appointees die or choose to retire.
Imagine the INDECISIVENESS and the pandering to the liberal, U.S. jealous, U.N. John Kerry would undoubtedly exhibit in the event of another attack on our citizens.
God is in control. Our nation will not be saved by politics. Prayer is unfathomably more important than our vote in November. But we still need to do what's right.
The choice this November is clearer than it has ever been in our lifetime. I contend that anyone who doesn't attempt to educate the ignorant on Kerry's frightening voting record is doing a disservice to their children and their country.

Peggy Noonan, leaving Wall Street Journal to volunteer
Interesting article here by journalist Peggy Noonan who is taking unpaid leave of absence from the Wall Street Journal to volunteer for the Bush administration.
"Everyone who reads me knows I am a political conservative, by which I mean I adhere to a particular philosophy, a way of viewing life and man and his time on earth. I do not think a lot of modern conservatives have taken on their philosophy because they were brought up in it, schooled in it, and swallowed it whole. And I don't think a lot of them became conservatives because they read a book by Hayek or Adam Smith and thought, "Ah ha, this seems sound!" I think a lot of people in our time who have become conservatives did it because they had a certain and particular kind of mind. To choose just one facet, they have a natural respect and even sometimes love toward human beings, while at the same time having no illusions--none--about who we are. Man is not perfect and is not perfectible, at least by other men. We are what we are; God made us and gave us freedom; we use it to ill and good; man best operates through certain arrangements and traditions, and those arrangements and traditions are best animated by respect for the individual and love of liberty."

Not a blogger...
I am much better at responding to other people's blogs... or commenting on particular issues in a give and take fashion, rather than just recording my own opinions and life happenings on a blog. Maybe I'll get better at this, but I pretty much just use this blog to save interesting political articles and such. Is everyone else like me in that it makes you feel good when someone comments on something you've posted? When nobody comments to a post, it makes me wonder if anyone has even read it. A no comment post is like a failure of sorts. Laura - please analyze this with your psychologist skills, but if it's overly critical, then just e-mail me the results in case it makes me look bad.

Men's Life
Friend of mine, Rick Riley, has served for the past seven years in full-time ministry at "Young Life" in Newburgh. He's the guy who started the "Wild at Heart" study at CFC which was very successful and definitely helpful in my life. He has started a men's ministry called Men's Life and is looking to hold men's conferences, bible studies, seminars, retreats, mission trips full-time.
Starting September 7th, a class will be offered at CFC starting at 6:00 going through John Elldredge's book "Waking the Dead." I'm looking forward to it. Rick also plans to offer "Wild at Heart" again on Thursday evenings, starting September 9th - this time for single men only. Information on that should be in the bulletin this week at CFC. It's all free of course - other than the fact that you need to buy the book and workbook (could get book at library).
In addition to those classes, Rick and a friend of his have organized a mission trip to an all boys orphanage in Jamaica where they will be building some bunkhouses for future mission trips. It's my understanding that in Jamaican society, the men see it almost as a badge of honor to see how many children they can produce (but they don't marry the women and take care of the children.) The orphanage is run by two Catholic nuns who, according to Rick, are tough as nails. They teach the boys a trade like butcher or cook or some other trades. They raise chickens and hogs at the orphanage and sell them to help support themselves.
Rick has really felt that this is what God wants him doing full-time, but currently the money just isn't there. He's holding on, depending on God (through His people) to provide support for this ministry, but I can tell he is starting to doubt whether he has really made the decision that God wanted him to make because of the financial crunch. Rick is married and has two? daughters, one who is 19 and the other 22ish in college. Yikes.
